Re: West Ham ⚽ Brighton - Official Match Thread

Our good results coincided with hard working defensive play taking the pressure off the defence and the elimination of those individual errors from the period where we conceded 2 goals a game every game. The last two games have seen a reversion to that. One goal at Chelsea was a mishit shot that turned into a perfect pass but the rest have been individual errors, poor marking & general sloppiness. Even allowing for the suspension of the VAR handball rule under the 'its only West Ham' clause.
We seem more secure with a back 3 but the key to that is hard work in front of it, more effort and energy further forward and a player like Antonio stretching other teams and forcing them back.

In the cold( very cold ) light of the next day it’s obvious that our results have been effected by letting in goals ( YEAH REALLY ) . So the concern is why we have become leaky at the back not so much the going forward issues we are all very aware of. Much of our earlier season success and even the Leeds game came from managing to keep the ball out, by luck or skill. That was really a big issue yesterday because as I watched the game until they scored I thought they would NEVER score. When we scored I was CONVINCED we would win the game ( with a better performing line up). Then we conceded.
So. Is the defensive problem starting further up the pitch or a defensive problem? If we don’t concede goals we are not going to get the Man U, Chelsea and Brighton results.

Arthur is a wing back. Not a very good one but a wing back. We do better with him in because the shape with the 3 at the back works better with him in. It also relies on a mobile player like Antonio and grinds into inaction with Haller there. It also relies on the running & movement of Fornals & Bowen but the major planks on here want Fornals out. Careful what you wish for With Rice & Soucek you need a creative player ahead. Not Noble. We have a thin squad with few options. Plus a conservative manager & the worst owners in the league Merry Christmas!

A said a week or so ago that Messiaku was one of these players that gets better the longer he's been out.
To think that he's reliant on us playing like Barcelona is ridiculous from those who suggest it.

Another frustrating game for different reasons.
Need a win tomorrow to make some bit of this season festive.

Absolutely dreadful 1st half but not surprising given that line up at home to fecking BRIGHTON! What was Moyes thinking of? It's bad enough being forced to play with one passenger but two?
The right changes were made at half time but, we need pro action not reaction!

I think what I'm getting at Jaan.... is that people and more importantly our Boss are saying we are missing Arthur Stepover... oh let's be honest hes a wing back or a left midfielder...at best... and for that we got a bit of running about... a load of under hit and over hit crosses... some fuck ups... and 2 assists (last 2 seasons)... and were missing him....?

Jaan, Northern has got it right. Arthur Masuaku is a joke of a footballer and we saw what young Johnson did yesterday and he's right footed FFS. Alan Devonshire was a brilliant footballer and frankly I saw him a lot and there is not one player in this side who could clean his boots. End of........................and before some yo yo says Rice or Coufal or Soucek.....one swallow etc. Devonshire did it EVERY year

Moyes looked on his chin strap.. his eyes told a story. Time to shape up.. or ship out if you ain't upto the job. The Antonio excuse doesn't impress me, far from it.

I've been thinking about this issue of tiredness and resting players over the busy period. You could argue that Rice, Bowen and Soucek all looked tired against Brighton. Lanzini and Yarmo, who have barely played, looked lively by comparison.
Brighton was perhaps an opportunity to rest a couple of players that we wouldn't have rested against Man Utd or Chelsea. It's not that Brighton are shit or that we should expect to win against them. It's just that if we were going to rest tired players, that would be one of the games we could do it.
Of the outfield player, Creswell, Rice, and Soucek have all played all 1350 minutes. Ogbonna and Bowen are just behind them. It might be a brave decision to rest players like Rice or Bowen, but can you honestly say that a team like this would be worse than what we saw in the first half?
Fab
Coufal Balb Ogbonna Johnson
Soucek Fornals (Moyes would probably prefer Noble)
Yarmolenko Lanzini Benrahma
Haller
I'm not targeting particular players. I'm just saying that if we're going to rest players over the busy period, why not rest the ones that have actually spent the most time playing?

I'm still not sure if Noble let down his manager's faith in him.. Or the other way round.. Either way.. It was a massive fuck up.

West side 8.03 Exactly this
Moyes and the squad have two fookin tough away games on a quick turnaround, which I am dreading, especially Everton.
But it's WHU.. so who the fook knows what's in store..
